Additional
Information
Clothes:
Our clothes are very important part of our shooting
as they depict the reliving of yesteryear of the Old
West Frontier. We dress in pre 1899 western
clothes or B Western Movie attire for our shoots.
Weapons:
The weapons we use are those of pre 1899 that were
used on the Old West Frontier. They are either
replicas or originals. The weapons one needs
to do cowboy shootin' is two pistols (single
action), 32 or larger caliber, a lever action rifle
or pump action rifle with external hammer of 32 or
larger caliber not to exceed 45 LC caliber, and a
shotgun which can be a side by side, model 1897 pump
or 1887 lever action of 20 gage or larger bore.
One also will need a pair of western style holsters
and belt for the pistols and a shotgun belt for
carrying shotgun rounds.
Ammunition: All pistol and rifle
cartridges will be loaded with lead bullets.
All shotgun gun rounds will be loaded with #4 or
smaller shot. The amount of ammo required at
our shoot will usually be from 50 to 60 rounds for
the pistols and the same for the rifle, shotgun will
be anywhere from 18 to 25 rounds. One should
plan on having a little extra with them in case of
reshoots.
What We
Shoot At: Our targets for the pistols
are steel silhouettes of various shapes and are
placed at about 7 - 8 paces from the shooter.
Same for the rifle targets except they are placed at
about 20 - 25 paces from the shooter. Most of
our shotgun targets are steel knockdown targets
(poppers) which are placed about 10 - 15 paces from
the shooter.
How We Do
Our Shoots: Our day of shooting
activity consists of several stages, usually five,
which have a shooting scenario which depicts what
the stage is about and the shooting order in which
one shoots at the targets on that stage as well as
the order and number of rounds fired from each
weapon. This is where the name Cowboy Action
Shooting™ comes from,
following the scenario to perform all of your
shooting on each stage.
The Ugly - Fees:
Yes. we do have a shooter's fee for each of our
monthly shoots which is $10.00 for nonmembers.
The fee is several dollars less for Black Canyon
Ghost Riders' members.
SASS™ Affiliation:
We are a SASS™ affiliated club. The Single
Action Shooting Society (SASS™) is a national
organization which cowboy shooters can belong to.
Joining will entitle you to your own registered
alias, such as mine, Fandango Dave, that nobody else
belonging to the national organization can use, and
many other benefits. You can check SASS™ out
at their web site,
http://www.sassnet.com .
